A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from elections to political events.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
