In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts shaking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
